Getting an old motor running is the easy part. The hard part is justifying the cost. If you’re paying for a repair today only to face another breakdown in six months, you aren’t fixing a problem, but you’re only subsidising a failure.
That’s a fencing and ironwork heuristic – the kind of logic a fabricator uses when you ask whether your wrought iron railings need patching up or replacing outright. It works for metalwork because labour and materials scale together. Gate motor repairs don’t work that way. The call-out alone is £80 – £150 before anyone touches a component.

Why 12 years? Most electric gate motor manufacturers (including Beninca, FAAC, BFT, Came, and Nice) design their operators for 8–15 year service lives depending on usage intensity. After 12 years, even well-maintained motors are typically operating beyond optimal specification on multiple internal components simultaneously.
Some faults are isolated and cheap. Isolated faults are ‘standalone’ issues where a single component has failed, but the rest of the system remains in good health. Other fault types are symptomatic of deeper deterioration.

Good parts availability
Beninca, FAAC, BFT, Came, Nice, SOMMER, Marantec, Gibidi parts are available for most models up to 10-12 years old, sometimes longer. Repair is viable if the fault is isolate.
Budget / discontinued brands
If your motor is lesser-known or discontinued and needs a control board or gearbox assembly, parts may be unavailable or at inflated grey-market prices. Replacement is often cheaper and more reliable even on a younger motor.
Practical tip: Before agreeing to any repair, ask your technician to confirm parts availability and the lead time. A '2-3 week wait' for a part in a frequently used commercial gate is a significant disruption and sometimes enough to tip the decision toward replacement.

A residential gate opening twice a day experiences maybe 700 – 800 cycles per year. A commercial site with delivery vehicles may run 30 – 50 cycles daily, which ends up over 15,000 per year.
Most residential-grade motors are rated for 100,000 – 300,000 cycles. Heavy commercial use on a residential-grade motor will exhaust this rating much quicker than expected.
If your usage has been significantly higher than the motor was designed for, the entire unit has aged faster than calendar years suggest.

A residential property in a high-use situation may run 10-20 cycles daily. A cheap £200 motor rated for 50,000 cycles will exhaust itself in 6-8 years. On the other hand, a quality FAAC or Beninca unit rated for 200,000+ cycles at a £600 price point will outlast two or three cheap units over the same period and require far fewer call-outs for repairs (given that you are scheduling regular gate motor servicing).
